The Difficulty of Military Honor in War

A Journey That Ended in Anguish is a sad article in the LA Times about the supposed suicide of a military ethicist in Iraq last June. I’ll let you visit the link to read the story rather than summarize it in a way that some would be bound to condider biased.

I’ve pointed out in some of my previous writings just how ethically difficult and stressful being in a modern superpower’s military can potentially be to Pagans concerned with issues of honor and ethics. Army Col. Ted Westhusing was apparently a deeply moral Christian who had written his PhD dissertation on military honor and the ethics of war.

It’s possible that he didn’t commit suicide, but instead was murdered by the civilian contractors he was supervising, but the official position of the Army is that he killed himself over his philosophical “rigidity.” Either way, it’s a disturbing story that demands deeper investigation.

The Solstice Is the Reason…

I don’t know about you, but I’ve gotten awfully tired of the annual whining by the Religious Reich about “the war against Christmas.” As usual, right-wing religious lunatics are trying to raise money by whipping up anger over their continuing loss of (unconstitutional) power and influence. “How dare other religions have holidays at this time of year! How dare they tell us we can’t shove our beliefs down everybody else’s throats! We’re the majority!”

So I’ve decided to finally do something I’ve been thinking about for years. Having heard about a secular humanist banner appearing at a town Christmas display a couple of decades ago, I’ve finally designed one of my own with the same theme and slogan: “The Solstice is the reason for the season!” I’m going to have a sign or banner made for my front yard and use this for Yule cards this year. If there is interest, I’ll put it at my CafePress site in various formats as well.

Here’s what it looks like:

The Pagan Man Countdown is on!

Even though I’m busy frantically finishing up a book for release late next year, Bonewits’s Essential Guide to Druidism, I realized that next Monday, December 5th, is the official release date for The Pagan Man. So I decided to add some excitement to it by listing a countdown on my front page. Be sure to go to your local bookstores and tell them to carry lots of copies, because this one is going to sell big! The ISBN and other info the stores will need can be found on my books page.

Half the people in Pagandom are guys, who are all going to want copies, and the other half are gals, most of whom know guys! This is the perfect Yule gift to give that son, brother, boyfriend, spouse (or spice), father, or other loved one(s) curious about Paganism but previously told it’s only for women and girls.

As soon as I have copies of my own from the publisher, which should happen Any Day Now, I’ll be mailing out the autographed pre-publication copies.
