Blogs Falling in an Empty Forest

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

That’s the title of an article in today’s NY Times, that “coincidentally” appeared at the same time I was writing yesterday’s post about this blog. It explains a bit and puts this blog’s lack of activity into perspective.

According to a 2008 survey by Technorati, which runs a search engine for blogs, only 7.4 million out of the 133 million blogs the company tracks had been updated in the past 120 days. That translates to 95 percent of blogs being essentially abandoned, left to lie fallow on the Web, where they become public remnants of a dream — or at least an ambition — unfulfilled.

While I never expected to make any money or become famous with this blog, (key blogger motives, according to the Times), I have been disappointed by the lack of reader comments. Yesterday’s snarky comments over at the Wild Hunt blog are actually an ironic reprise of a pattern I’ve seen: we get more responses from readers of other blogs than we do from our own first-hand readers.

Indeed, perhaps the major attraction of the social networking sites for me has been the actual feedback and conversation from others that appears almost instantly whenever I post anything serious or silly. If I want to post longer bits, I suppose I should use Live Journal more.

So now I ask you, should we bother continuing Views from the Cyberhenge or let it die a dignified death? After all, you can always follow us on Facebook and MySpace, etc.

I get fascinating email

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Here’s a couple of emails I received recently, both from the same eddress:

i find your attempt to christianize paganism laughable. the first time i heard your name i knew you were one of these blasphemous hippie idiots trying to destroy paganism and turn it into some pacifist sterile PC bullshit. and i saw a video of you wearing the star of david. thats why i serve morrigan. there is no way you can soften her, and turn her into the joke that you have turned the rest of the old gods into. i also think it’s funny how you promote letting n***ers and f***ots in and then call people like me, who’s ancestors worshipped these gods “fake”. i always like to listen to people like you when i need a laugh. and you jews are really arrogant nowdays. you dont even try to hide what you are doing.

i find it interesting how you take up for your filthy jew ancestors, claiming to be a pagan. ANY pagan who knows history should hate jews. it was the jews who bribed constantine to enforce christianity, and thats why rome got it’s ass kicked. and here you are trying to do the same thing. like i said, it’s obvious wether you try to deny it or not. you’re just another filthy judeo-pig and nobody with half a brain would give you a second thought.

This is just so wrong, on so many levels.

1) The family name is German-Wendish. A lot of Jews came to the USA from parts of Europe with Wendish names, but so did a lot of Lutherans, such as my great-great-etc.-grandfather, Adam Bonnawitz in 1749. My direct father was Presbyterian, my mother Roman Catholic. (I could post a scan of my baptismal and confirmation certificates, but the writer, like the crazed Obama-phobes, would probably insist that they were forged.)

2) As for ethnicity, I have about a dozen different ancestries, mostly Celtic and Germanic, plus some Native American. To the best of our geneological research, I don’t have a single Jewish ancestor — not that I would care much if I did. I probably have more “aryan” ancestry than the writer has, and I don’t care about that either.

3) I’ve never worn a Star of David in my life. I frequently wear a pentacle, which ignorant fools who can’t count often mistake for one.

4) Since I’m not Jewish by either tribal ancestry or religious ancestry, the anti-Semitic raving against me is entirely off-target, not to mention nonsensical and historically ignorant. The early Christians made a concerted effort to infiltrate and subvert the Roman Empire. They started killing Jews, along with the Paleopagans, as soon as they had the power to do so.

5) Creating Ár nDraíocht Féin: A Druid Fellowship as a public Pagan “church” does not “Christianize” Paganism, except to those who equate all organized religions with Christianity. It just makes Paganism more accessible to those who need it.

6) As for the Morrigan, I’ve been a worshiper of Her for forty years and even wrote a popular hymn to Her that I use in ritual. I think She would find idiots like the writer far more objectionable than myself.

7) Of course, I “let” African-Americans join ADF. Most of them have more Irish ancestry than I have. Most Irish-Americans whose families have been here for more than a few generations have some black ancestry (and vice versa), because freed slaves and indentured Irish servants frequently married. I don’t have any AA ancestry that I know of. I might through the French Canadian side of the family, but it wouldn’t bother me if I did.

8) We have a lot of GLBTQIZ members in ADF because we’re not using the Wiccan yin-and-yang energies to generate power for our rituals. So gender and orientation are irrelevant to participation in ADF, as they should be in all religions.

9) No, we don’t hide what we’re doing, either in ADF or in my career as a whole. We’re creating Neopagan movements for people who want to live and pray in the 21st century, not the 17th. We actively discourage racists, homophobes, anti-Semites and other ignorant bigots from joining us. So I’m not at all upset that the writer doesn’t want any part of what we’re doing, and that makes me very happy.

I am an old hippie and my politics are extremely liberal. That doesn’t mean everyone in ADF or the Neopagan movement as a whole shares those characteristics, though I suspect the vast majority do. This is yet another area of life where Oberon’s Principle of Non-Choice prevails: “If you don’t like it, you can’t have any!”

I thought about posting this jerk’s eddress in this blog, but decided against it. Losers like him thrive on attention and wilt when properly ignored. Feel free to discuss him in your comments, however.

Video testing results so far

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

And the winner is Skype! At least, I’ve had far fewer crashes with it. Yahoo Messenger freezes up every few minutes and no one has sent me an iChat eddress. I was able to video talk for over an hour on Skype with the lovely and talented Noira in the Czech Republic this weekend about the remodeling of Neopagan.net.

So here’s the next step: any priestesses, senior druids, or godi out there with a Skype (or iChat) account and a big screen monitor? I’d like to try a free video chatfest with a roomful of people, see how well it works. If it goes (reasonably) smoothly, we could schedule video workshops for different groups around the country (world?) for far less than having me come in person!

Again, if there’s any Pagan geeks out there who can turn me on to embeddable web broadcast code (that would work with my Mac and USB QuickCam) I can put into a page here at Neopagan.net, please do so!

Neopagan.Net 2007 Year-End Report and 2008 Donation Campaign

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

It’s January again — the coldest month for Pagan Elders and Seniors (at least in the northern hemisphere). Phaedra and I have had a busy year, publishing two new books (Real Energy and Neopagan Rites) and signing a contract for another (The Laws of Magic). I presented at PantheaCon in California and we both presented at Starwood in New York, the two biggest festivals in the USA. We both went to Buffalo New York to give advice to local Pagan leaders and answered numerous phone calls and emails asking questions about liturgy, small group dynamics, and local Pagan politics.

I’ve been doing tarot readings at local psychic fairs in the NYC suburbs as well as performing Pagan weddings and handfastings. Phae has been working longer hours than ever at her bed store. I’ve been researching and writing new books on Halloween, dualism, and the laws of magic.

Nonetheless, for all our activities, both public and private, we ended 2007 having earned significantly less income than we did in 2006! Much of this has to do with the horrible state of the American economy (for all but the very richest). Pagans aren’t buying as many books, or jewelry pieces, or music CDs; festivals aren’t hiring as many speakers or bringing them in from far distances like they used to. The general public isn’t buying home furnishings or much of anything else like they did in previous years, so the commissions Phaedra earns have been dwindling.

At this point, although we have reduced expenses as far as we can, we are behind on the rent and utilities, behind on our phone and online service bills (we were offline for a couple of weeks in December), and thousands of dollars in debt on the credit cards we’ve been using to pay monthly and medical expenses. Other Pagan Elders and Seniors we’ve contacted are in pretty similar situations. We’re lucky that we have very understanding landlords. Our friend Martin is an acupuncturist who’s been giving me free treatments, though I still need a few thousand dollars’ worth of dental work.

On December 31, 2007, Phae and I finally made our marriage legal, in a brief but touching ceremony led by our friend Bill. This means that I will finally be covered (in a month or so) by Phae’s medical insurance, but she’ll be having higher deductions taken out of her paycheck.

Here’s what we’re planning to do to bring in more money in 2008: We’re going to be creating two new websites, one for live tarot readings and one for promoting our wedding services — after all, even in a terrible economy, people still get married and still want readings. We’re contemplating turning Neopagan.net into (or just adding) a live chat forum available by subscription. We hope to be moving to Ashland, Oregon, where we will be able to live much more cheaply, but will need to accumulate funds to make the move. We hope to sell publication rights to two new books on magic and one on Halloween. I’m going to go to as many festivals and conventions as I can book.

No matter how hard we work, however, none of these activities or projects will generate significant money for several months. So, once again, we turn to those of our friends and fans who have helped us out in the past. If you find yourself with anything left after the holidays, we could certainly put it to good use. You will find PayPal donation boxes all over our websites or can always go directly to www.paypal.com and use our main email address: “ibonewits@neopagan.net”.

Some of you have donated very generously in the past, and we can’t in good conscience ask for more cash from you. We would ask you to pass the word about our books and products and services to others. You could tell friends who are getting married and want to do it in full (or light) Pagan — or pirate or medieval or Sci-Fi — styles, that I am available to perform the ceremonies. You could ask local metaphysical shops to stock our books and local festivals to bring either or both of us out to present. You can direct people to our websites or send them to our Amazon store. To buy books, candles, ritual gear, and other Pagan goodies, visit our Cyberhenge~EarthSpirit Shop, where you can get all your metaphysical supplies and donate to the Cyberhenge at the same time!

Whether or not you decide to help us out this year, we’d like to thank you for your past support and to remind you, as always, that many other Pagan Elders and Seniors are likely to be in dire straits as well. So please take the time to check up on any you know and see if they need help that you can provide.

May everyone have a blessed and prosperous 2008!

Isaac & Phaedra Bonewits

Testing, one, two, three …

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

I’ve got a webcam now and I’d like to test the various Mac software programs that run with it. So if you have a Skype, iChat, or Yahoo Messenger ID and would like to help me do the testing, please email me with your ID and a good time to try calling you. My ID, btw, is “ibonewits” on all three systems. I’m creative that way …

Once I know what software works well, I’ll be offering live video Tarot readings and chats/web seminars.

The evolution of Neopagan.net

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

(Moved from comments) It looks like Noira has made a good start on the revamp of our website! What do our other readers think?

I’ll check with our service provider (Pagan owned and Pagan run Drak.net), but we use only a fraction of the stream capacity we could. I like the idea of incorporating a YouTube channel. Perhaps we could combine this with a one-to-one chat program we can use for lectures and readings?

We’re thinking of changing the title of the site to “Isaac and Phaedra Bonewits’s Cyberhenge” or maybe just “The Cyberhenge.”

Thanks so much for starting this project, Noira!

Other folks, what would you like to see at Neopagan.net?

Happy Hannakwayulmas!

Monday, December 24th, 2007

We’re back online again, thanks to some generous donations from the community and some serious budget-chopping. I’ve done some minor edits on the website and more will come in the next couple of weeks. I’ll be making a section of the website to promote my services as a unique wedding officiant and custom rites-of-passage performer, another to incorporate live webcasting of tarot readings and magical seminars and chats (just as soon as I figure out what software to use on my Mac that will work with clients’ PCs), and a complete makeover of Neopagan.net has been offered by Noira, our Czech Druid! Let us know what you need, Noira, and we’ll get it to you.

In the meantime, as I often talk about during the winter months, now is a good time to encourage those around you to donate to the support of Pagan Elders and Seniors. Speaking gigs have been drying up as Pagan festivals cut the number of people they bring in to their events, previously Pagan-friendly publishers are reducing the book contracts they sign (since they think the “Pagan fad” is over for now), and the economy is as bad for Pagan Elders as it is for everyone else, so odds are your favorite writers, speakers, and community organizers are feeling the pinch. Come on! Do you really need that diamond-studded platinum wand or that complete set of 100 goddesses carved in jade?

Offline for a few days

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

If you are sending us email or waiting for new blog posts, you may have to wait a while. We will be offline for a few days due to financial difficulties. If you’d like to see us back up and flying sooner, there is a “Donate” link to the right.

In other news, Merlin of Amulets by Merlin fame tells me he has my entire line of Pagan jewelry designs in stock, in both silver and “nu-gold” bronze, ready to ship within 48 hours of receiving your orders. Surprise someone for Yule with their very own Druid Sigil, Oak Awen, or Dagda’s Club!

I’ve received a box of Neopagan Rites from Llewellyn and will be shipping out the pre-publication orders on Friday.

Blog software updated

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Today, with a certain amount of trepidation, I decided to update the Word Press software that runs this blog. To my great relief, everything works fine! The problem we had with false “no comments” notices was fixed by updating Spam Karma, a nifty plug-in that kills spam comments. I also downloaded and installed a plug-in that should allow us to start posting podcasts here (as soon as I figure out how).

Once again, the Techno-Druid strides slooooooooowly into the future!

A Comment on Comments

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

For some reason, ever since I updated the blog software, it has a bad habit of saying there are no comments when there actually are. So feel free to click on the “No comments” tag to see the comments!
